What is a roofing “square”?
A square is 100 square feet of roof area — the standard unit roofers use to measure and price a job. Most shingles are sold so that three bundles cover one square.
What does “6/12 pitch” mean?
It means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. A higher first number is a steeper roof, which has more surface area and needs more material.
How much waste allowance should I use?
A simple rectangular roof usually needs about 10% for cuts and offcuts, while a roof with many hips, valleys or dormers can need 15–20% because more pieces are trimmed to fit. Complex cuts and steep pitches both push the figure higher.
Does the calculator account for valleys, hips and dormers?
No — it works from a simple rectangular footprint and pitch, so extra cutting lines like valleys, hips and dormers are not modelled directly. Increase the waste allowance to cover them, or measure complex sections separately and add them together.
How many shingle bundles come in a square?
Most standard three-tab and architectural shingles are packaged three bundles to a square, which is the ratio this calculator uses to turn area into bundles. Some premium or heavier shingles use four or five bundles per square, so check the product packaging before ordering.
Does the pitch factor apply to flat or low-slope roofs?
Yes, though the effect is small: a flat roof has a pitch factor of 1 since there is no slope to add area, and low pitches like 2/12 or 3/12 add only a few percent. Flat and low-slope roofs typically use membrane roofing rather than shingles, so squares are still a useful unit but bundle counts do not apply.
Does this estimate include underlayment or flashing?
No — the result is the sloped roof area and a shingle bundle estimate only. Underlayment is typically sold by the roll to cover a set number of squares, and flashing is bought separately by length for edges, valleys and penetrations.
