Why does it stop at 3999?
Standard Roman numerals only go up to 3999, because M (1000) is the largest common symbol and you never write more than three in a row. Larger numbers needed a bar over the letters to multiply by a thousand, which is rarely used today.
What is the subtractive rule?
To avoid four identical letters, a smaller symbol before a larger one means subtraction: IV is 4 (5−1), IX is 9, XL is 40 and CM is 900. This keeps the numerals short and is why 2024 is MMXXIV, not MMXXIIII.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No — the standard system has no symbol for zero, since it was designed purely for counting and tallying rather than as a positional number system. If you enter 0, the converter has nothing valid to show.
How many times can a letter repeat?
I, X, C and M can appear up to three times in a row (III is 3, XXX is 30), but V, L and D never repeat, because a repeated 5-like symbol would always be replaced by the next symbol up. This is why 4 is IV rather than IIII in the standard system.
Why do some clocks show IIII instead of IV?
Many clock faces use IIII for 4 purely for visual balance against VIII on the opposite side, and by tradition dating back centuries — it is a decorative exception, not the mathematically standard form. The converter always follows the standard subtractive rule and returns IV.
How would I write numbers larger than 3999?
Historically a horizontal bar (vinculum) placed over a numeral multiplied its value by 1000, so a barred IV meant 4000. This notation is rarely used today and is not supported by the converter, which is why it caps out at 3999.
Can I convert a Roman numeral back into a regular number?
This tool converts in one direction only, from a regular number into Roman numerals. To go the other way, add up the values of each symbol left to right, subtracting when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one.

The formula
The system is built from seven values — I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000 — written largest first and added up. To avoid four of the same letter, a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted: so 4 is and 900 is . The converter works greedily from M down to I, adding each symbol as many times as it fits, which reproduces the standard form.
